Subject:	LETTER SUPPORTING CHILDRENS RIGHTS
I am writing to urge you to legislate to protect our children's rights by enabling retrospective presumption of parentage to apply to gay couples. The legislation which covers presumption of parentage at the moment excludes gay couples, this leads to children with only one legally recognised parent. This can disadvantage the child in many ways, for instance their other non legally recognised parent cannot easily seek medical treatment for them. Should the couple separate, the non-recognised parent would not necessarily be obliged to pay maintenance for the child, leading to financial disadvantage for the child. Most dramatically, in the event of the legally recognised parent’s death, the child would legally be considered an orphan. These children love and need their parents and they deserve to have both their parents recognised as other families do. By recognising the family unit which already exists and recognising the rights of the child to have both their parents recognised, you would be enabling the child to have an equal footing with other children in the community.
